"Issues concerning the recent emergence of African groups in Hong Kong have not yet elicited comprehensive studies in our society."

Why African?

In Hong Kong, there are a lot of ethnic minorities staying in this city. As it was a British colony, both English and Chinese are official languages in HK. Language is one of the main factors contributing to the diversity of races in Hong Kong. With population less than 0.4% in Hong Kong, African community is of relatively ‘minor’ than other more prominent minorities groups such as India, Pakistan, Filipinos, Hakka or Teochew. Even though there is a growing amount of interest on the historical, cultural, and linguistic linkages between Africa and Asia (Rashidi and van Sertima 1995, Hotz 1998, Cooper 1999, Griffith 2001, Bodomo 2001), the situation cannot be compared to the vast amount of literature that exists on African-American, African-Caribbean and African-European communities. Moreover, unlike many studies about the other minority groups in Hong Kong such as South-Asians domestic helpers, and Hakka Village inhabitants in the New Territories, issues concerning the recent emergence of African groups in Hong Kong have not yet elicited comprehensive studies in our society. Despite of the limited scholarly research resources and data related to the African community in Hong Kong, we believe this newly emerged social community is a well worth research subject.
